Tempering chocolate is one of the hardest things to do; even experienced professionals will fail at this task from time to time.There are machines that will do this, but they cost 4 figures. At less than $400, anyone who has an electrical outlet in the kitchen and can press two buttons can have perfectly tempered chocolate in about 20 minutes. Even the klutzy will be successful.

The most important feature of this machine is that the level of temper produced by this gadget is absolutely perfect, and is identical to the chocolate I temper by hand. It has separate settings for white, milk, or dark chocolates. I use one at work, and no longer have to temper chocolate for other employees. Mechanically, the machine operates flawlessly (an important fact, since the bowl rotates continuously whenever the machine is on). Operation is simple, since it has instructions printed right on the machine.The temper cycle is computer controlled, so you do not really need to know how it is done; you just push a couple of buttons. Also, it will operate by itself once you press the buttons; tempering by hand requires your full attention for at least half an hour. With this thing, you can get it going and do something else for a few minutes, which is extremely important in a professional kitchen.

There are some minor drawbacks. It has several pieces that you assemble, so be careful that you do not lose any when you break down the machine to wash it. The capacity is 1 1/2 pounds; this sounds like a lot, but once you get into it, that pound and a half will get used up awfully fast. The cycle time is 20 minutes, so if you run out of tempered chocolate, you will have to wait that long for another batch; there is no provision for trickle-feeding. Also note that you must wash out the machine when you are done; there is no provision for overnight storage of the melted chocolate.Of course, these drawbacks can be cured by purchasing the professional version of this machine (I think it is called "X" or "X1320" or some such thing), at about $1300.

For the uninitiated, you must use real chocolate, and not confectionery coatings. You must temper if you are going to do something fancy with the chocolate: dip candy, fill chocolate molds, make those fancy chocolate decorations you saw on cable TV, etc.If you are going to cook with it (cakes, cookies, brownies, sauces, etc.), you do not temper chocolate.

Presto 06000 6 Quart Kitchen Kettle Review

I bought one at Walmart last year. I use it pretty often, but mostly for making popcorn. Turn temp to 350, put a couple-three tablespoons of peanut oil in the bottom, and then when the oil heats up throw in 1/3 to 1/2 cup of popcorn. Put the cover on and keep the pot moving while the corn pops. When the corn has just about stopped popping, turn the heat off and pour the popcorn into a bowl. Butter, salt and eat. YUM!

I've deep-fried scallops in it, steamed vegetables, cooked rice, made soup and even baked potatoes. The thing works great! I wasn't going to write a review until I saw Alton Brown talk some trash about it on Good Eats. I got pretty defensive about my humble Presto cooker! He was doing a silly episode about "man food" like corn dogs and thin, square hamburgers. Well, when Mr. Brown was explaining how to fry the corn dogs he said (while holding a Presto mutlti-cooker) that a pot with an heating element on the outside of the bottom wasn't a good idea because first the element had to heat the pot and then it had to heat up the oil. Too slow. After that he displayed three home-use rectangular fryers with immersion type heating elements. He said they were also better because they each had cooking baskets and break-away magnetic cords. He picked the one with the digital controls, while implying that this was somehow better than the manual rotary temp control.

I don't know if A. B. gets paid for product placement on his show, but I really thought he was being disingenuous regarding the Presto "pot." First of all, about the heating element on the bottom of the Presto cooker: During the frying demonstration, Mr. Brown had some text placed over the screen that said that if you didn't have a special electric fryer, that a pot on the stove-top would work fine. Isn't that interesting? What the heck is a pot on the stove, but just a heating element on the outside of a pot that heats up the pot and then the oil inside? That's exactly what he was criticizing the Presto kettle about. What gives? Secondly, the Presto cooker DOES TOO have a magnetic break-away electric cord to keep the unit from tipping when the cord is yanked by accident. Also, the Presto cooker DOES TOO come with a frying-steaming basket, which Brown implied it didn't have. Nya, nya, nya! See, I can be just as immature as Alton Brown!

I don't know if the rectangular fryers are really better, but I'm sure they cost a lot more. My Presto cooker was $26.85 at Walmart. I keep it in a lower cabinet - it doesn't take up much space there. I pull it out when I need it. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and simple. When we go to Maine in August, I'm allowed to take only one of my counter-top appliances. So, I just take the Presto cooker with me. Normally, I cook steel cut oats in a small bowl, sitting in water, in a slow cooker (a bain marie - sort of - found the idea here [link deleted]) I can do the same thing with the Presto cooker. And I have a pot with me on vacation that I can do so much more with.

One last thing. With my slow cooker I use a plug-in timer called a Rival Smart-Part. But it's not rated to control the wattage of the Presto multi-cooker. I found a heavy-duty programmable digital timer that I use to turn the Presto cooker off and on automatically. This device really allows me to use the Presto cooker like a slow cooker, without over-cooking stews and such when I am out of the house all day. The Presto multi-cooker is a terrific appliance! Buy one now, and don't believe everything you see on TV!

Flash Update! Here is another reason to buy a Presto multi-cooker: I'm making a beef stew with red wine tonight. What a mess browning the stew beef! I have a 3 quart Wagner cast-iron chicken fryer, and this is what I used to brown the beef chuck cubes. These days the meat hasn't been aged much, and so it is very difficult to brown properly. I managed to do it in batches, but the stove-top got pretty messy by the time I was done. I put the browned meat, vegetables, and garlic into the Presto cooker ( I made sure to deglaze the chicken fryer with wine and include all the tasty bits) and continued to cook the stew. And then I could proceed to clean up the stove-top while the beef stew simmered away in a different part of the kitchen. I am very pleased not to have to clean up all that oil spatter after dinner!

This Cooker is made of cheap material. I sent the first one back it was damaged so bad. The 2nd one I received was bent up as well. I was frustrated w/ getting the boxing and mailing it back from our local UPS store so I kept it. I have a neighbor who has the same Cooker & he to sent his first one back due to damaged. This fryer is supposed to internally regulate itself to keep within 10 degrees of the desired temp... what a crock! I had it up to the highest temp (375), and it fried foods terribly, so I got out my candy thermometer: the highest temp it got to (and this was measured in the so-called "hot zone") was 350, and it was more often than not in the 325 range. Use a candy thermometer in a high-sided pot. This product was a terrible disappointment.

OK, I have been cooking for a good 30 years and a decent deep fat fryer has always been a wish of mine but I knew that like most kitchen appliances it would likely be designed by a group think bunch of men who do not have a fog of an idea of what it's actually used for, so it was easy for me to resist the urge to buy another GM equivalent of a deep fat fryer that would end up just another piece on the heap at the local Good Will. But upon reading the specs on this baby, it actually seemed as if someone did their homework here..! YIPES...this is like the number one rule of product design in America...save money by not doing any prior research and pass the savings on to the consumer by spending more on advertising. These being my assumptions I was happily surprised after purchasing this product.

First...it has BTUs! Da...a novel idea in a cooking product! 1800 watts of them! Next it disassembles so you can actually clean the darn thing...another rare idea in this industry. I know they think the women who use these things are brainless twits but I am here to protest otherwise...products that can be cleaned without renting a sandblaster are like...well...good! You can use this product inside on a table or counter without a terrible splattery mess and the filter keeps the fat from stinking up the kitchen. The foods turn out truly deep fried instead of fat soaked, as was my fear. I still use newsprint under the fryer but the mess was minimal, as was the smell. But wait there's more...it heats up fast, has a lid that allows you to view the foods being fried, a handle that can be raised and lowered while in use, and best of all a temperature gauge that can almost keep the oil at a constant temperature as you take out and add new foods. The temp will lower but it comes right back up to speed without so much as a two minute wait...now that's cooking! So far I have tried fried chicken, fish and chips, and onion rings...very yummy! And next I will answer my daughters prayers and make homemade... D O N U T S ! Then I will progress to my wildest dreams by attempting tempura...the true test. I have a good feeling in my gut of guts that this baby is gonna pass!

I have never owned or used a turkey frier.I am very safety minded and the thought of all that peanut oil at a high temperature and the open flame, well I just cant bring myself to buy one.I did, however purchase the Char-Broil Big Easy Oil-Less Infrared Turkey Fryer.So far in three weeks I have cooked three turkeys.Since I have never used a real deep fat turkey frier, the operational part of my review of the product is a bit one-sided.I can say that of all the appliances that have more than 2 moving parts, the ease of operation of the Big Easy is just that.Big and easy.The three turkeys I have cooked in the cooker were just under 12 pounds.The first was rubbed with olive oil, it was delicous and moist but a bit dark on the outside.The subsequent 2 were rubbed with peanut oil and had a better complection, but were just as moist and flavourful.I did experience a bit of overcooking of the drumsticks and wings.I believe that this could be cured by sheilding them with some aluminium foil (that will be my next experiment).I have yet to cook anything but turkeys, when I do though, I will make an addendum to this review.All in all, I am pleased with the product and highly praise its ease of use and safety in producing a nice fried turkey.My son is a proffesional Chef and agrees that my terminology is correct, oil has been used and as he states, "technically Dad, it is fried, but not deep fat fried"Thats ok by me.

We got this for frozen fries.Works great.The instructions on the fries want a higher temp than 375, the max of this and most fryers, but cooking at max 375 for 6 min works just fine.The only two problems I have with it are the smell and after a few times taking the lid off to clean it, the lid stopped snapping back into place. It goes back on, but steam comes out all sides and is loose when opening.One side snaps in so I haven't had it fall off, but the other side seems to just have worn out.

The smell there doesn't seem to be anything to do about.Even the expensive ones it seems from the reviews that the only way it wont smell up the house is cook outside or near a window and use a fan.

Due to lack of cleaning, the old one we have is fairly dirty and we decided to get a different deep fryer.After reading reviews on a bunch of them, I decided to just get the exact same one.They all seemed to have great and terrible reviews.We know the quirks of this one, and it really does work great on frozen fries.

Bayou Classic 1114 Single Burner Square Patio Stove Review

Do not be fooled by stainless steel frame. If you are buying a stove for outdoor use, this product isnt it for you. The burner is a poor designed cast iron with some silver colored paint. It has already rusted and will not last. So what the stainless steel frame for if its parts rust?

Plus, the burner is only secured by one single screw. It rotates and tilts. If I would design this product, I would use brass. The burner should be secured on all three legs on a stainless steel plates which itself has to have at least three screws on the frame. The frame will need another Y shaped under bar to firm up the burner mounting.

Dont think Bayou Classic have any good engineer. They should be removed from Amazon's vendor list if they do not improve.

I am surprised Amazon markets such a poor product.

I purchased this unit last month to make deep fried chicken wings, Hooter-style...I got a good recipe and fried them up per instructions and made the most outstanding hot wings in the world....the fryer worked very well....very easy to use once I figured out that my GFI outlet in kitchen had tripped...the unit brought the oil to temp fairly quickly and recovery time was out standing....liked the basket and the drain plug for oil....I highly recommend this unit...note....when frying put it on your oven under range hood to help eliminate the 'fry smell'....1st time I used I didn't and stunk up the house....after that I never had that problem.

Although this versatile appliance will steam and boil as well as deep fry, it was its frying ability that caught my interest and convinced me to buy it.And am I glad I did for last night we enjoyed some of the best fried chicken ever to come out of my kitchen.And yes, that's saying something.While we don't overindulge in fried foods, through the yearsI've fried my share of chicken, most of it to positive reviews.This batch was particularly moist and juicy, yet crisp on the outside, a fact which I attribute, at least in part, to the adjustable temperature gauge on the Multicooker.None of my other deep fryers had that feature.With the others, I was forced to rely on the manufacturers' preset temperature which I suspect wasn't really hot enough to prevent the chicken from absorbing some of the oil and becoming somewhat soggy.The Multicooker allows a range of 250° to 375 ° F.I set it at 375° as the manual suggests and the results weremouthwatering.

As for capacity, it's generous.The basket measures roughly 8" longby 7" wide and 3 1/2" deep.I was able to fit 4 large chicken thighs per batch with room to spare.I'm sure I could have added two more but I preferred to err on the side of caution to avoid overcrowding. Because the chicken was boneless and skinless, each batch only took about 10 minutes and was perfectly done.I fried three batches back-to-back and had no problems with the fryer overheating.

Deep frying is usually messy no matter how careful you try to be but my experience in that department was pretty positive too.The cooker is solidly built and simple to assemble.The lid fits the pot securely and the basket is easy to raise and lower with the lid in place, which greatly reduces spattering and the risk of burns.

I have no doubt that I'll use the Multicooker for boiling and steaming at some point but if all it ever did was deep fry, I'd still consider it money well spent.

I have used propane fryer's in the past, and the oil can take just as long (30-45 mins) to heat up.But with this, there is NO open flame.You can select the temperature of the oil on the dial.

I have used this fryer very successfully for the last three Thanksgiving meals.No muss, no fuss.Pour the peanut oil in, heat 30-45 mins, put the dry (NOT FROZEN!!) turkey in and cook 2-3 mins a pound and wait for some of the best turkey you have ever tasted.

For $50 you can't beat this as a basic fryer, especially if purchasing for a smaller household. The capacity is enough to cook for 2 or 3 at a time, the unit is well-designed and solidly built, and even though it lacks a temperature control it heats the oil to 375 degrees (I checked with a cooking thermometer) which is what most recipes seem to recommend. The filter system works well to contain odors and the drainage tube makes cleaning a breeze. The only issue I've had is that it's hard to avoid condensation on the viewing window, but that's no big deal. Highly recommended.

T-Fal FR4004002 Avante Deep Fryer, Chrome & Black Review

I used this the first time to cook beer battered fish and shrimp. The oil heated up quickly stayed hot while frying. Cleanup was a breeze, the lid and basket come out and go right in the dishwasher. The heating element is below the tub not in it, which I think is a pluse. The only thing was the batter tends to stick to the basket, IU had to use a "fryer scoop" to lower the food in and then once it set drop it in the basket.

All in all well worth the price.

Euro-Pro F1066 5-Liter Electronic Stainless Steel Deep Fryer Review

After reading the reviews here that prompted me to buy this model, I thought it was only right that I share my thoughts after purchasing this model.
I've been using it about a month and am very pleased with the unit. It lets you know when the oil is at the right temperature (probably the biggest failure with deep frying... not hot enough). I didn't time it, but think it takes anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes to reach 375 degrees. Clean-up is 'relatively' easy.
'Relative' because I have come to the conclusion that "hot oil" just doesn't relate to being 'clean' or 'easy.' With this unit you will need a funnel. A plastic funnel is fine, as you shouldn't drain it while it is hot... and typically you are draining it back into a one-gallon plastic container. That's another thing. You're going to use a gallon of oil. Peanut is "suppose" to be the best, but seems to be the most expensive. I've only used peanut oil so far with this unit. Forget hard lard (Crisco) since it isn't recommended (as others have noted the heating element is in the oil, so I suspect that hard fat and the heating element would work somewhat like putting an egg in a microwave).
Also plan on buying a lot of oil. Oil breaks down due to the heat and just because you see them cooking chicken at KFC in one batch of oil all day, it doesn't work for the home unit. In other words, if they cook 15 lbs. of chicken a day per gallon of oil, you won't be able to cook 1 pound of chicken each day of the next 15 days. I think this is because you actually have the oil 'hot' for about 4 hours whether you cook just 1 pound or 15 pounds of chicken. It takes 3 hours for the oil to cool enough to pour it back into the plastic bottle. I would say that at the most, one should use the same oil 3 times... and probably 2 times is pushing it.
My previous experience was with the Presto Fry Daddy, Kid, brother, uncle, etc. I got one of those when they first came out and continued to be grease sick until about three years ago when I picked up another no-improvement Fry Daddy. It really does make a difference cooking hot enough and at the right temperature. But, recalling the complaint on one of the reviews of this unit... folks, this is cooking and you'll just have to do some experimenting. This ain't microwave where you set the time to 24 seconds and things come out perfectly. A chicken breast will take longer to cook than a chicken nugget.
I consider the 'acid' test for these fryers is using hush puppies (375 degrees) and then checking how much they retain the oil. Excellent, in my opinion.
I don't want to sound like a "generic warning label" but I do think you should have some safety concerns. It relates more to the amount of oil. We are talking about a gallon of oil that is very hot and stays hot for a long time. If you have little ones around (or a family get-together) I think this thing should stay in the cabinet. Yes, it has a unique plug that "should/might" detach if it is pulled, but accidents happen. I've worked in a burn center before and no matter what you can imagine, it IS worse. And to the patient, it is worse than what I can imagine looking and listening to them. The entire 'family' is changed forever.
Everything but 2 things can go in the dishwasher. The heating element is attached to the plastic display panel (one piece) and you'll need to hand wash the heating element (or wipe it down with a paper towel). The display will need some wiping with a cloth also since it gets some splatter. The outside wrapper (part that you see in the photos) is not recommended to be placed in the dishwasher. I sort of doubt it would cause any damage on the outside wrapper so I'll probably put it to a test someday, just like my "hand washables." Basically all the real dirty/greasy stuff goes in the dishwasher.
I would have given this product a 5 star but think a funnel or other way of easily pouring the oil back into the neck of a one-inch container should have been included with the fryer.
I bought this at Sears (higher price than Amazon) and they keep this model in stock. You might consider the GE unit that looks 'very' similar to this unit for less money. Do some research first, however. I was willing to pay the extra due to the numerous times that I got things that "looked the same" but turned out to be a different animal.

T-Fal 982629 Deep Fryer Charcoal Filter, Round Filter, 5 Pack Review

If you have a T-Fal deep fryer, you have to have these filters - the filters are probably the best feature of the fryer, and really knock out the odors and excess grease when you are using the fryer. Unfortunately, the filters aren't cheap, and in my experience, don't last as long as advertised. T-Fal says the filters should last up to 40 uses, but I think you are lucky to 10 or 20 uses out of them before they need changed. If you don't change the filter, the fryer still works fine, you just loose the advantage of filtering out the odors and excess grease.

That being said, buying a five pack of filters at what seems to be a very fair price compared to other places I have seen is a good deal, and the service from the Amazon vendor was perfect.

if you are just outfitting your kitchen, start with this pan. Especially if you are cooking for 2 or 3. The 10" deep skillet is one of the least expensive, decent fry pans available. You can do a dutch apple pie with the lid on in the oven, you can cook eggs, pancakes, french toast on the lid. If you are cooking for 4, and want just one fry pan, get the 12". Otherwise this pan does it all. Roast, fry, oven and stove top. The pans are tough, mine is going on 20+ years.

Downside, takes a bit more oil or grease than a Teflon pan, but then if you own a parrot you already know you can't cook on Teflon. Makes you wonder how good it is for the rest of us.

just love it. the heat stayed at 350 degrees almost the entier time i was cooking, and i cooked a fifteen pounds of fish,fries, huspuppies, cheese sticks, and much more. when i shut it off i was still ablet to fry more fish. the frying was fast. the grease didnt burn. BUYERS BEWARE! Make sure it matches the product description!

I ordered this model number (#9195) on February 9th 2010 from Amazon, it was just delivered today (February 16, 2010). The one I received does NOT match the "Product Features" description. According to Amazon.com's product listing the model #9195 is supposed to have the 20 PSI regulator and a 48" hose. However! The box I received says it's the #9195 model number BUT the features listed on the box don't match this product listing here! The #9195 I received says it includes a 10 PSI regulator and 36" hose. I just added an image to the customer images on this product for you all to see.

There is a difference though it may seem small! A 20 PSI regulator gives more control over the flame on the burner, and obviously a 48" hose is well... longer than a 36" hose! I'm impatiently waiting for Amazon to correct this. I'm crossing my fingers they send the one that actually matches the "product features" listed here. I will update you all with the results when I get them.**UPDATE February 19, 2010**

Amazon has once again, screwed up my order on this product. I ordered this way in advance so that I could have it by today. They attempted to exchange it for the correct one... and lone behold, the one they rushed to correct the mix-up was not only sent directly from Amazon's Returns Center instead of Bayou directly like it was the first time... but it was also a cheaper model!! A model that was nearly half the price I paid at the time for the model #9195 (which was a hundred seventy six dollars!). So since no retailers near me sell these in stock (which is why I purchased it here in the first place). I got stuck having to use the one they sent me as a "correction" which was an older and much cheaper model, which it too was a 10PSI regulator and 36" hose ... because there was no way they'd be able to correct it in time for today AGAIN. They issued me a refund of the difference in cost for the one I ended up needing to keep. I also, have since looked up the model #9195 from Bayou's company catalog online and sure enough Amazon has the wrong product description for this model number!! So BUYER BEWARE EVERYONE! In all my years doing business with Amazon.com this is the first time I've had them screw up this royally. However, they will still have my business because the customer service to resolve this issue was great--even though, I had to Google to get their direct customer service number (1-800-201-7575)!**UPDATE March 3, 2010**

I have had this deep fryer in the past, tried two others since and have kept going back to this one. I like the Grandpappy size because I can fry a lot or little at one time. It frys evenly, even when it gets the flour at the bottom, and it is so easy to clean and use. I have given away my fancy ones for this down to earth "best of the best" fryers. Thank goodness I was able to find it on Amazon after the one I used for a zillion years lost most of its coating and I decided to retire it. It was still cooking even, though, just decided it was time for me to get a new one in case I couldn't find one in the future if it ever gave out!

Bayou Classic 1118 32-Quart Stainless Steel Turkey Fryer Review

I bought the Stainless Steel fry pot because SS is a better conductor, stronger metal compared to Aluminum, and cleans better.But, there's a heckuva price premium.I found the pot to be very sturdy and great quality, but three things bothered me somewhat:

1) The thermometer clip that comes with that pot is poorly designed.Once the thermometer is inserted on the lip of the pot, it direct the thermometer at an angle towards the center of the pot.Sure, the temperature reading is more accurate at the center, but this makes it difficult to remove the bird without first pushing the thermometer tip to the side of the pot.You'd rather not try to remove the thermometer as the pot is hot and you could splash the oil.

2) At this price, I would expect some fry baskets, but none were included.Without these, you have to try to fish out small items thatyou are frying such as fries, mozzarella sticks, etc.It can get hazardous.Prefer not to use the steam basket as a fry basket.

3) I coupled this pot with the BC Single Burner Outdoor Patio Stove, but even with this high BTU burner, it took a little more than 1/3 of my propane tank to heat peanut oil (2/3 full) up to 300F with an outdoor temp of 55F.Thus, with a full propane tank, you might be able to fry one turkey during the fall without changing tanks.

Overall, this pot is better quality than the Aluminum pot, but not really worth the high price, especially since it's not part of a combo pot/burner.

I got this fryer as a free gift! Upon opening the box I was not intially impressed with it.
But now that I have been using it regularly for some months and it does have some short comings.I dont think I will go back to frying the old fashion way with a pot and temp. gauge.I am considering buying a second one for frying pastries only.Below I have listed the pros and cons I have run into while using this fryer.

CONS:
1.The wire backet has a handle that is designed to distach from the wire basket.When dealing with HOT oil, this was an accident waiting to happened and not worth the risk.My solution was to take the wire basket to a welding shop and have the handle perminately welded to the basket!

2.The white lettering denoting the tempature settings ect. is not permanent. The first time I cleaned this fryer with just dishwashing washing liquid and water.The white lettering wiped right off, never to be seen from again!!!! I have'nt thought of a solution yet to replace the white lettering.Because the white lettering wiped off the first time I cleaned it I'm only giving this fryer 4 stars,else I would have given it 5 stars.

3.It takes 20 minutes to heat up to it's maximum tempature of 375 degrees.

4.This fryer has a break away electric cord.The kind that uses magnets to hold the plug in the socket.
I personally find this a nuisance.Because sometimes the cord will break away due to slight movement.

PROS:
1.Using a tempature gauge I was able to confirm that this fryer when set to it's maximum tempature of 375 degrees.Does in fact reach 375 degrees with no problem.So far I have used it to fry french fries,onion rings,chicken wings,country fried steak and it's done an excellent job on all of them.

2.This fryer has a timer.I have'nt found any other fryers less than $100 that have a timer.Even the table top commerical fryers that cost upwards of $400 dont have timers.Though I have never used it.I think it's good to have.Even the double tank version they sell dont have a timer.

3.It dismantles without tools easily, making it easy to clean.

We love fried turkey but wanted a safe indoor alternative. THIS IS NOT IT. First it does not hold an 18 pound turkey as advertised.The ad does not tell you that it must be used OUTDOORS because it has dangerous carbon dioxide emissions.The turkey was NOT cooked in 1/3 the time, it took 3 hours.The drip pan dripped and now we have grease all over the patio.It tastes NOTHING like fried turkey and is a poor second choice to an oven made turkey.I see NO USE for this product what so ever.I am returning for a refund but who will pay for cleaning my patio and for that turkey that was no where as good as the turkey we usually make.I expect more from Butterball.It feels like they never bothered to try it before they took it to market.Fortunately we tested it before Thanksgiving or it would have been a disaster.

I invite someone from Butterball or Masterbuilt (imagine it took two large corporations to create this useless appliance) to contact me so I can tell them personally what a bad job they have done.I would give it ZERO stars if that was an option. Save your time, save your money, save yourself from a mess and an awful experience.

Well, I've used my CoolDaddy for the first time and the food turned out great!Fry time was great.The basket worked like it was supposed to.It had easy cleanup.However, I've read the other reviews and nobody mentions that the CoolDaddy is not Cool at all.I accidentally touched the outside housing while frying my food and burned my fingers!Now, while there are no blisters to be had, my fingers were sore for a minute or so after I touched it.So buyer beware, if you are looking for a real "cool touch" deep fryer just as this Presto COOLDaddy boasts, you will be disappointed.I must say though, that it is cooler than the regular non cool touch deep fryers. So other than that, everything is great!

I have long been skeptical of "deep frying" at home.The smell, the mess, the smell...Anyway, I recently decided to throw a fish fry and decided it was time to invest in a fryer.The biggest issue for me in purchasing a fryer was the sturdiness of the burner stand.Besides having the ability to heat 12 quarts of oil, I also wanted a burner stand that would hold the weight of 20 quarts of beer for my homebrewing.I decided on the Bayou Classic.

This Bayou Classic kit came with everything and setup was simple.The burner stand exceeded my expectations for sturdiness and the height was such that when using the 10 quart stock pot, you could place the burner stand on a safe sturdy work surface to elevate it off the ground.I plan on also using this burner with my wok.The burner was able to bring the oil to temperature in approximately 15 minutes.The Fish and Chips turned out great.

Of course when using 350 degree boiling oil, you do not want your weekend fry festival to end with either a trip to your local burn unit or a reason to see if Allstate really has you in good hands.Common sense must prevail and last time I checked, Amazon does not sell that yet.Set your fry area up away from kids, pets and anything that you want to see another day.If you follow that simple advice, all should turn out okay.

Clean up can be best described as "sticky", but in order to get the life out of your aluminum parts, don't skimp.Now that I have tackled fish and chips, I will have to move on to the other "must have" fried foods these days: turkeys, chickens, and Twinkies.I can't wait.

I received this deep fat fryer by Bella Cucina for XMAS 09 and was extremely pleased. The first batch of fries were delicious. However on the 2nd day, halfway through the breaded and spiced chicken it quit. The lights went out on the fryer, no reset to push in etc, etc. There is not much I can't fix and without a receipt I couldn't return it. I took the plastic lid off the electrical portion and discovered that the little plastic safety knob was loose and the fryer wouldn't turn on as a result. If I depressed that the fryer turned on. But due to poor design or manufacturing it was a wonder that the fryer ever turned on. I haven't been able to repair it. My wife said buy another brand and leave it at that.
I dislike the promise being unfulfilled, but that's reality. Buy another brand. Amazon sells this one for 39.95. The one I had came from Macy's.

The SS pot is awesome.Love the rubber feet on bottom and it cleans up beautifully; like Stainless Steel does.However, my temperture dial and control is defective and I can't use it on any setting except 'barely on warm' or it goes into FULL ROLLING BOIL and the food burns!This is suppose to be a deep fryer AND a slo cooker.Right now it's only an extremely FAST and INTENSE Deep Fryer.

I have written and I expect to have a new gauge/cord soon.Hopefully, I just got a bad cord and a new one will solve the problem I stated above.I had a PRESTO deep fryer with ceramic insert FOREVER and LOVED it, but due to my dropping a plastic lid into the bottom and not knowing - I damaged my pot of 15+ years. So I bought this new one.Here is hoping that replacing the defective cord will solve the temp problem.I would be interested to see other reviews on this to see if anyone else had/has this same problem.

DeLonghi D14427DZ Dual-Zone Deep Fryer, Stainless Steel Review

I have no excuse for buying a fryer, I have a high stress job, am an ex-athelete, whose eating habbits have gone down the drain. Buying a fryer, especially one as good as this, has further added to my fat and cholestrol intake.

This fryer comes from a very good design house, DeLonghi based out of Italy makes some really good products, but be advised, this unit is : "Made in China". So it is not that well built. The outer body is thin sheet metal which will bend very easily.

But that said, it has a solid inner oil chamber and a good and solid frying basket. What I like is the concern for customer safety, often at times, a person might mistakenly pull a power cord and trip the appliance. Now if you do that with a fryer filled with boiling hot oil....I leave possible implications to your imagination. The DeLonghi takes care of such an eventuality by 2 very simple, basic, yet very effective principles.
1) The power cord is short, so you wont have any extra length to get entangled in.
2) The power cord is connected to the fryer by a magnetic connection. Nothing plugs in, it is just held by a permanent magnet. So in case there is a minor tug, the power cord will disconnect, and you wont trip it.

Regarding operation, really it could not be simpler. I am used to complicated sequences and special dances which need to be performed whenever any new appliance is being used for the first time. So I picked up the manual, connected the unit to the power supply, filled it with oil between the min and max limits, and then looked up the manual for setting the temperature and timer. It was ridiculously simple. The unit automatically sets the temperature to 320, all I had to do was to press + or - to increase or decrease (respectively) the temperature. After that, you press the mode/start button now the timer display comes on, you press + or - to increase the time to the desired number of minutes. Then you press the mode/start button again, and the unit heats the oil within to the desired temperature and beeps to let you know when that is done. Now you immerse the basket with the goodies inside, and press the start button and the unit counts down the time till the timer runs out and then beeps to let you know.

The beeps are loud and clear, so if you set the unit in the kitchen,to heat up or are waiting for the food to be cooked, and you are seated in the living room catching a movie, even then you will be able to make out the beep. That is a good feature. God knows how many pizzas I have burned in convection ovens which never beeped loud enough for me.

The lid has a glass window, which is basically useless, because when you start frying, the vapor obscures the view. But thats not a major problem. I have never seen this sputter, so you can safely take off the lid to check how the food is being cooked.

There are 2 problems however.
1) The oil takes way too long to heat. Almost 12 to 15 minutes to heat from 68 degrees to 356 degrees. Thats a lot of power consumption.
2) The manual states that the unit must be filled with oil in between the min and max levels which are pointed out on the inner side of the container. Now thats kind of hard to make out after you have fried food in the unit a few times. The remains obscure the markings.

Apart from these few minor complaints, I am pretty pleased with its robust performance, ease of use and excellent quality. The food is always cooked to perfection. I have absolutely no complains here.

I would honestly recommend this unit, because of its safety features and great quality and the excellent brand name of DeLonghi. I do feel this unit is built to last.

Turn temp to 350, put a couple-three tablespoons of peanut oil in the bottom, and then when the oil heats up throw in 1/3 to 1/2 cup of popcorn. Put the cover on and keep the pot moving while the corn pops. When the corn has just about stopped popping, turn the heat off and pour the popcorn into a bowl. Butter, salt and eat. YUM!

I've deep-fried scallops in it, steamed vegetables, cooked rice, made soup and even baked potatoes. The thing works great! I wasn't going to write a review until I saw Alton Brown talk some trash about it on Good Eats. I got pretty defensive about my humble Presto cooker! He was doing a silly episode about "man food" like corn dogs and thin, square hamburgers. Well, when Mr. Brown was explaining how to fry the corn dogs he said (while holding a Presto mutlti-cooker) that a pot with an heating element on the outside of the bottom wasn't a good idea because first the element had to heat the pot and then it had to heat up the oil. Too slow. After that he displayed three home-use rectangular fryers with immersion type heating elements. He said they were also better because they each had cooking baskets and break-away magnetic cords. He picked the one with the digital controls, while implying that this was somehow better than the manual rotary temp control.

I don't know if A. B. gets paid for product placement on his show, but I really thought he was being disingenuous regarding the Presto "pot." First of all, about the heating element on the bottom of the Presto cooker: During the frying demonstration, Mr. Brown had some text placed over the screen that said that if you didn't have a special electric fryer, that a pot on the stove-top would work fine. Isn't that interesting? What the heck is a pot on the stove, but just a heating element on the outside of a pot that heats up the pot and then the oil inside? That's exactly what he was criticizing the Presto kettle about. What gives? Secondly, the Presto cooker DOES TOO have a magnetic break-away electric cord to keep the unit from tipping when the cord is yanked by accident. Also, the Presto cooker DOES TOO come with a frying-steaming basket, which Brown implied it didn't have. Nya, nya, nya! See, I can be just as immature as Alton Brown!

I don't know if the rectangular fryers are really better, but I'm sure they cost a lot more. My Presto cooker was $26.85 at Walmart. I keep it in a lower cabinet - it doesn't take up much space there. I pull it out when I need it. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and simple. When we go to Maine in August, I'm allowed to take only one of my counter-top appliances. So, I just take the Presto cooker with me. Normally, I cook steel cut oats in a small bowl, sitting in water, in a slow cooker (a bain marie - sort of - found the idea here [link deleted]) I can do the same thing with the Presto cooker. And I have a pot with me on vacation that I can do so much more with.

One last thing. With my slow cooker I use a plug-in timer called a Rival Smart-Part. But it's not rated to control the wattage of the Presto multi-cooker. I found a heavy-duty programmable digital timer that I use to turn the Presto cooker off and on automatically. This device really allows me to use the Presto cooker like a slow cooker, without over-cooking stews and such when I am out of the house all day. The Presto multi-cooker is a terrific appliance! Buy one now, and don't believe everything you see on TV!

Flash Update! Here is another reason to buy a Presto multi-cooker: I'm making a beef stew with red wine tonight. What a mess browning the stew beef! I have a 3 quart Wagner cast-iron chicken fryer, and this is what I used to brown the beef chuck cubes. These days the meat hasn't been aged much, and so it is very difficult to brown properly. I managed to do it in batches, but the stove-top got pretty messy by the time I was done. I put the browned meat, vegetables, and garlic into the Presto cooker ( I made sure to deglaze the chicken fryer with wine and include all the tasty bits) and continued to cook the stew. And then I could proceed to clean up the stove-top while the beef stew simmered away in a different part of the kitchen. I am very pleased not to have to clean up all that oil splatter after dinner!

I have received my Actifry this week. The potatoes I fried here came out perfectly fried. Imagine the best french fries you have tasted but without the greasy feeling and oil dripping from them. The oil you will find on the fries once they are ready is virtually invisible. If you want them very crispy, just let them fry a little longer than the specified time. If you like them tender on the inside, follow the specified time provided on the user's manual which is around 40 minutes for 2 1/5 pounds.

So far I have tried frying potatoes, bananas, nuggets and onions. All came out with brilliant results and what's best, using minimal oil. They all looked and tasted just like fried but were not greasy. And they were very crispy.

The only drawback is the quality of this gadget that was clearly not made to last. I have used mine 6 times only and the paddle has already stopped working twice for no apparent reason. The paddle was attached correctly and no food was blocking it from turning around. I had to turn off the unit several times before the paddle resumed working on both occasions. So I guess this will not last much since it has been used only a few times.

The Actifry has been around on Europe for some years now and I have found several people complaining about the product quality. It is not unusual to find reviews of people having it exchanged or fixed twice during the one year warranty time.

I would expect something so expensive to last a lot longer. If someone else finds the same issue with the paddle please comment.

UPDATE (01/08/2010):

I recommend checking Amazon's website in UK if you are interested in more reviews of this appliance. There you will find 240 reviews of Actifry.

My Actifry is being used around 5 times/week and sometimes the paddle still stops turning, but I find that removing and inserting it back usually solves the problem in no time. I am still very satisfied with the food it produces, but really wish that Tefal would improve the durability of this item.

UPDATE (02/02/2010 - One star removed from the 3-stars-rating, now only 2 stars):

I would like to point some flaws I have found on the unit until now. There really is a lot of room for improvement by Tefal:

1. The paddle sometimes stops turning for no reason at all, as I have already described above;

2. The piece that attaches the panhandle to the pan consists of two screws and a small piece of plastic that goes all the way down the side of the pan. More than a HUNDRED times I had to run to the machine because I could hear the paddle had got stuck and could not turn. ALL THESE TIMES the reason was that the food had got stuck due to this little piece of plastic and the paddle could not turn anymore because it was blocked by the food. Would it have been so difficult to attach the handle without this small piece of plastic? I truly doubt it;

3. The paddle would be so much easier to clean if it was not hollow on the bottom. Lots of food pieces enter the several small holes which seem to be there just to make it awkward to clean;

4. The plastic lid cover gets cracked by the heat the machine delivers! I have never removed this cover to clean, so it can't have been dropped or badly handled during clean ups. However, a crack has appeared at the front of the plastic lid cover. All I can think of is that heat from the machine during its normal operation cycle has made it crack.

In my opinion, the downsides of this machine outweigh the great results it delivers. That is really a pity since this machine could have been much better designed and the use of higher quality materials shouldn't add much to such a steep price.

UPDATE - 04/09/2010

This week, the paddle has finally stopped turning for good. And the plastic lid cover seems to crack a little bit more each time I use it. Luckily it is still in the warranty period since I bought it 6 months ago. So that was the lifetime of my Actifry - 6 months.

When it arrived I thought to myself that the filter holes look a bit larger than expected.Upon first use the filter is only good for large particles.Grit and bits of things like floured coatings slipped through.I ended up using a couple layers of cheese cloth instead.

One other "nit" to pick.Because of the design, when inserted into a largish container openning, there is little to no room for air to escape so I had to lift the funnela little to let the air out.Laddling 4-5 liters of oil one handed was messy at best.

All in all my $2 large plastic funnel and cheese cloth performed better for my needs.

I bought this to replace an old, cheap deep fryer that was encrusted in old oil deposits. I chose the Waring because it has an immersed heating element (which reportedly should better maintain the high heat necessary to produce crisp fried foods), looked compact, and fit the modern black & stainless steel theme of my kitchen. I also liked the professional-looking buttons, the reported ease of cleaning, and the trusted Waring brand.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the fryer. But let's start with the negatives. The most annoying thing is that it does not have a charcoal filter. I knew this going in, but didn't think that would be important--I thought these are a gimmicky ploy to make extra money on people who want to replace them periodically. Well it turns out I was wrong. My last fryer had one, and even though I never replaced it, it still helped to substantially cut down on that fast-food-place-oily smell when cooking. While this fryer has a built-in wire mesh filter, it really does nothing to reduce the smell, probably because it is not fine enough. As a result, every time I use the fryer, most of my 2-bedroom duplex apartment smells like a fast-food restaurant. This smell tends to linger in the air and in fabrics like clothing and drapes. I started cracking open my kitchen windows, but this only helped a little bit, and it's too cold to do that all the time! The smell is not the end of the world though, as it does eventually dissipate, sometimes as late as a day later (I should mention I have a sensitive nose). The exhaust fan in my apartment kitchen doesn't ventilate to outside the building but I suspect if it did, this would help.

Another much more minor negative aspect is that the black plastic is not as glossy as it looks in the picture. It is a thick, matte finish that actually looks and feels a bit cheap next to the sleek stainless steel. This is simply an aesthetic complaint--apart from a scratch that I somehow caused by rubbing a wire cooling rack against it, I have had no problems with the integrity of the construction. On the plus side, it is thick and keeps the unit cool to the touch.

Now on to the positives. The unit is nicely compact and a tidy cube-like shape, with no protruding parts to clutter the look or make storage difficult. The stainless steel is good quality, and the window on top is thick glass, not Plexiglas. The buttons have a cool retro professional look to them. The best part is the inside. There is a removable stainless steel bowl that is very simple to remove and wash, even in the dishwasher. I love this feature! Other fryers I have used in the past have been a nightmare to clean because you have to tip the entire clumsy unit to dump the oil, and then wash it under a sink, which always made me nervous because I was afraid some water would get inside and damage it. This unit alleviates that problem--you simply remove the frying basket, slide out the heating element, and then you have access to the bowl.

The handle is well-designed. It has a locked up position when the basket is elevated (to fill with food), and then a down position that drops the food into the oil. Just make sure to close the lid before you drop the basket because otherwise you may get scalded with very hot steam like I did once! The magnetic power cord is a cool safety feature and works great. It does come out easily (that's the point) and I have read reports about people not liking these because of that fact. However this has never happened to me, probably because the outlet I plug it into is just a foot behind the fryer.

The cooking ability of the fryer is good. I was hoping to be amazed because of the immersed heating element but I wasn't--it's pretty similar to my last machine (a Rival I think) which didn't have an immersed element. The foods (primarily french fries) do not appear to come out consistently crispier. I'm confused by this though because with both this and my last fryer, the results have been variable. Sometimes the fries come out pretty crispy and sometimes not. The only thing I can think of is that length of cooking and potato quality may be factors. Regardless, the fries have always tasted good and the basket size is perfect for my household of 2. I should mention that I never use the timer because I prefer to eyeball it.

To summarize, I'd recommend this unit to small households who are interested in sleek looks and/or are tight on space, but can tolerate the fried oil smell OR who have a good ventilation system in their kitchen (e.g., place it under an exhaust fan) to manage it.

I have owned several deep fryers in the $80 to $100 price range, but had gone without a deep fryer for several years. I purchased my WPF100B at Costco for $30. The Amazon Marketplace price today is $89.99. I probably would not have been disappointed even if I paid $89.99. The design is very intelligent. The breakaway cord is very short for safety and it is easy to attach to the fryer without looking. The heating element is attached to the front panel and drops inside the oil container, so you cannot use solid oil (solid at room temp) such as shortening or lard. I use oil anyway, so that is not a disadvantage for me, and this feature makes it so easy to clean. The element must be cleaned by hand but the oil container is steel and can be cleaned in the dishwasher - along with the fryer lid. The lid even has a small window so that you can see the food cooking. The cool touch feature is so cool that I was able to pick up the fryer and move it while it was cooking. It even has small finger recesses on the bottom to improve your grip when moving it. The fryer basket is small for the relatively large amount of oil required - about 3 quarts. If you have the extra space you may want to consider a larger Waring Pro model so that you can cook larger portions. The manual recommends to filter the oil and refrigerate it after each use - up to 10 uses. The manual also recommends that you discard the filtered/refrigerated oil after 6 months.
